Then Magic Arrived.
It is the year 2364. Humanity has spent nearly two centuries spreading across the stars, carried by ancient interstellar gates of unknown origin, first discovered in 2186 by explorer Erik Nielsen when he found the gate connecting Sol to the Volsung System. For thirty-six years, these gates were simply transit infrastructure — miraculous, yes, but not supernatural. Hundreds of worlds were settled. Civilizations took root.
Then, in 2222, something changed. Across every colonized world simultaneously, thousands of people began manifesting strange abilities. Meta-energy — what would come to be called magic — had entered the cosmos, and no one knew why. It began killing its hosts: ether would build up in a mage, unreleased, and eventually destroy them. It took a man named Arian to first understand how to "stream" it safely. His knowledge saved countless lives. He founded the Volsung Academy, the first institution for mage training, on a storm-wracked ocean world one gate-jump from Earth.
By 2364, magic is a known quantity — feared, regulated, and quarantined. Mages are identified, removed from ordinary society, and sent to academies. The League of Worlds calls this public safety. The mages call it exile.
That's where Lucian's story begins — exiled from Earth aboard a transport ship, barely processing what he is, when a mysterious sorceress delivers a prophecy that changes everything. He is marked by the Manifold: the reality beneath all reality, the source from which every Aspect of magic flows. What that means will take the full series to reveal.
The Seven Aspects of Magic
Within ten years of magic's first appearance in 2222, scholars had identified and catalogued seven distinct Aspects — each one corresponding to a real force in the physical universe, now accessible to those sensitive enough to feel it.
- Thermalism — heat, fire, cold
- Atomicism — matter, fission, transmutation
- Dynamism — electricity, magnetism
- Radiance — light, perception, concealment
- Binding — containment, energy, structure
- Psionics — kinetic force, the mind
- Gravitonics — gravity, weight, repulsion
What makes the system dangerous — and endlessly interesting — is combination. Fourteen named Dualstream pairings exist, each producing effects neither Aspect could achieve alone. A mage fluent in Dynamism and Atomicism can generate Death Lightning, a forbidden combination capable of instant disintegration. Most mages master one Aspect. The rare few work across two.
And then there is the Lost Aspect. Mage-scholars believe it exists because the gates themselves — when examined magically — contain all Seven Aspects clearly, but also unmistakable gaps: spaces where an eighth Aspect should fit snugly, yet nothing can be detected or channeled. Many say it doesn't exist. The series has something to say about that.
Places Worth Knowing
The Starsea universe spans hundreds of worlds. These are two you'll want to know before you start.
Volsung
A storm-wracked ocean world orbiting a G-type star, Volsung is where it all began. The mage Arian chose this world to found the League's first and most prestigious magical academy, carving it directly into Transcend Mount — a fortress of black stone rising from a perpetual storm-sea.
This is where Lucian is exiled. The academy is ancient, weathered, and crusted with ice. The planet beneath it is beautiful and violent in equal measure. "The storm tempered. The mind ascendent."
Archea Station
A massive torus station orbiting a desert world, Archea is where the League's civilized interior meets the lawless Trailward frontier. The primary rings are bright and multicultural; the understation is brothels, pirate dens, and black markets.
Zheng Yang — the Terror of the Stars — once seized it entirely, commanding the Golden Armada from its lowest levels. During the Third Swarmer War it became one of the galaxy's most vital chokepoints. "Many pass through. Few truly leave."
One Story. Ten Chapters. Fully Complete.
No waiting for the next book. No abandoned cliffhangers. The whole journey is here.
